The Revival of the Urban Winery
Wine consumption is on the rise, and you no longer have to travel to wine country to enjoy it!
Prior to Prohibition, much of California’s modern winemaking was in San Francisco. Following a move to Napa Valley, wineries and winemaking became synonymous with the rolling countryside found there. But does it have to be? We don’t think so!
The makings of an urban winery
Urban wineries are popping up in cities like Seattle, Portland, San Diego, and making a return to San Francisco. By definition, an urban winery is located in a city setting rather than amongst vineyards. They can blend in on city streets, in industrial parks, or bustling neighborhoods. Along with these fresh new locations comes fresh new freedom. As an urban winery in San Carlos’ industrial area, our beloved Domenico Winery is where winemaking meets winebar, tasting room, event space, local hotspot, and so much more.
Winemaking starts in the vineyard
Worry not, our grapes are not grown here on Industrial Road, but that doesn’t mean we’re hands-off. Approximately 150 miles from Domenico, our 8-acre vineyard in Amador County sits in the center of gold rush country. The growing conditions here are perfect for our award-winning Primitivo and Syrah grapes.
Following harvest, our grapes are transported to Domenico in the cool of night, where production takes place in the same fashion as a traditional winery. From grapes to barrel to bottle, all in one location. Domenico winery is the best of all worlds: A thriving vineyard rooted in California’s gold rush history, a tasting room immersed in San Carlos culture, and a winemaking cellar located in the heart of Silicon Valley
Be where the people are
With a growing focus on local craft products and convenience, why not bring the winery right to town? After all, that’s where the people are! All of the luxury, none of the pretentiousness, Domenico provides an authentic winery experience with a friendly atmosphere to boot.
Plus, you have the opportunity to get your hands a little dirty with our in-house winemaking school. That’s right! Under winemaker Dominick Chirichillo, you have the unique opportunity to create your own world-class wines from start to finish. Where else have you done that? Visit our tasting room and instantly transport yourself to a romantic Italian winery. Relax, unwind, and listen to live music. Join us in our tasting room Saturdays and Sundays, 11 am - 4 pm. See you soon!
